Medical Missionaries— First Lutheran supports Dr. Mark and Linda Jacobson, medical missionaries in Arusha, Tanzania. Dr. Jacobson oversees Selian Lutheran Hospital and provides regional medical care to many of the Maasai and Waarusha tribes, caring for some 50,000 outpatients each year. In addition to regular financial support, First Lutheran has provided a blood analyzer and an infant intensive care unit. Our Mission teams often work in conjunction with "Lutheran Disaster Response."
Malawi Companion— First Lutheran Church has a companion relationship with a parish in Salima, Malawi. As companions, we correspond with, pray for, and learn from each other. In 2005, we funded the building of a Parish Center and have frequently supported feeding stations for children. Malawi is in central Africa.
Lutheran World Relief— We collect and assemble health and school kits, make quilts, and conduct clothing drives. This Lutheran agency works in most corners of the world with the poor. Emphasis is placed on agricultural development, water systems, housing, education, etc. Lutheran World Relief responds to natural disasters around the world.
Global Health Ministries— We support health care programs of Lutheran churches in other countries by gathering and shipping useful donated health care equipment and supplies to countries where such materials are not available or are very expensive. We also encourage the financial support of facilities for patient care, mosquito netting to protect families from malaria, drilling wells and the cost of sending a sea container of donated medical supplies to other countries.
Mission Teams— First Lutheran sometimes responds to disasters or special needs by sending relief teams. Examples include: Nicaragua home building in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch; school and hospital assistance in Tanzania, Africa; flood clean-up in Grand Forks, North Dakota;
gulf coast clean-up and construction after Hurricane Katrina; and home building in Mexico.
