The worship service usually has three readings from the Bible; at least one should be a text from one of the four Gospels. A funeral is a gathering of believers who assemble to hear good news from God’s Word. The pastor will want to know if you have favorite passages. To assist you, below you will find possible selections.

Joel 2:12-13, 23-24, 26-29

I know that my Redeemer lives
The Lord is my shepherd
The Lord is my light and salvation
As a deer longs for flowing streams
God is our refuge and strength
You have been our dwelling place in all generations
Bless the Lord, O my soul
God’s steadfast love endures forever
I lift up my eyes to the hills
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord
O Lord, you have searched me and known me
With my voice I cry to the Lord
Hear my prayer, O Lord; give ear to my supplications
Praise the Lord, O my soul
For everything there is a season
God will swallow up death forever
God will keep them in perfect peace
Comfort, O comfort my people
Do not be afraid, for I am with you
I have called you by name, you are mine
I am the first and the last
God will not forget you
Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me
I am about to create a new heaven and a new earth
As a mother comforts her child
I will turn their mourning into joy
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases
Turn to me with all your heart

Peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ
Baptized into Christ Jesus
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness
Who will separate us from the love of Christ
Whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s
Christ, the first fruits, has been raised from the dead
Where, O death, is your victory
We have this treasure in clay jars
A house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens
Saved by grace through faith
Our citizenship is in heaven
We do not want you to be uninformed about those who have died
We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
A living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
See what love the Father has given us
Do not be afraid, I am the first and the last
God will wipe away every tear
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth
The Lord God will be their light

Blessed are those who mourn
Come to me, all you who are weary
The resurrection of Christ
Let the little children come to me
The resurrection of Christ
The light shines in the darkness
For God so loved the world
I will raise them up on the last day
I am the good shepherd
My sheep hear my voice
I am the resurrection and the life
Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth
In my Father’s house are many rooms
That through believing you may have life in his name
